Particles

What is a particle?

A particle is a word that has a grammatical function, but does not fit into the eight main parts of speech. (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, interjection, conjunction)

Particles do not change. It is a function word or a word that must be associated with another to give meaning.

The infinitive "to" in "to fly" , "to run" , "to walk" is an example of a particle, although the word "to" can also be used as a preposition with a verb. In this example it doesn't really have any meaning on its own.

Examples:

  • I wanted to go the movies.

  • She started out with twenty rand.

  • Now, who would like some dinner?
