What is a syllable?

  • A word is divided into different parts. Normally based on sounds.

  • A syllable is an uninterrupted segment of sound which is formed by opening and closing the mouth to form vowels.

  • Every syllable must have a vowel. Some syllables have 2 vowels that make 1 sound e.g. ea in meat

  • You count syllables by listening to how many vowel sounds you hear.

Six different types of syllables:
